OSM Sierra Leone Full Size Loose With Rosette

The Operational Service Medal for Sierra Leone has been awarded for campaigns in Sierra Leone from the 5th May 2000 to the 31st July 2002 by the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom. Awarded for service on any of 5 operations in Sierra Leone or the Joint Operational Area which included Senegal, Gibraltar and offshore support ships.

The OSM Rosette is awarded for participation specifically in Operation Barras or Operation Maidenley and worn on the medal ribbon (as well as a rosette being added to the ribbon bar.)

The obverse of this medal has the crowned profile of Queen Elizabeth II which is attached to the ribbon with a scrolled suspender bar. The reverse is an 8 pointed star, with different crowns impaled on every other point. There is a circular centre to the star, which has FOR OPERATIONAL SERVICE written around the central circle, and within the text shows the Union flag. The ribbon is a standard width of 32mm wide and is striped with a red centre, followed by stripes of Navy and then light blue on each side of the red, representing the 3 services. The outer edge of the ribbon is green representing the jungle. The rosette should be stitched to the ribbon about midway between the medal and brooch bar when being worn.

Qualifying time for the OSM SL medal and rosette is 1 day of service on Op Barras or Op Maidenley. Service on the other 3 Sierra Leone operations would qualify personnel for the medal but not the rosette.
